The Friends of the Ashland Public Library will present Sawaari, a world music ensemble led by tabla player Amit Kavthekar. He will be joined by percussionist Fabio Pirozzolo, and Mike Rivard on sintir and bass. The concert will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2 to 3 p.m. at the Ashland Library, Community Room, 66 Front St. The concert is free and open to all ages. A reception will follow.
The tabla, which Kavthekar plays, is a membranophone percussion instrument originating from the Indian subcontinent, consisting of a pair of drums, used in traditional, classical, popular and folk music (Wikipedia).
Sawaari explores the nexus of Indian taals, Arabic maqams, and trance music from North Africa and Italy, fully encompassing the varied interests and backgrounds of its band members. With an emphasis on rhythm, they create music that has a searching, exploratory quality bringing together the meditative with the energetic and taking the listener from sparse tranquility to complex syncopations in a moment. Meaning “to ride” in Hindu, Sawaari invites audiences to be transported into a world of rhythm and sound that knows no borders and no limitations. To learn more about Sawaari, visit sawaarimusic.com.
“We planned to include two classical and two world music concerts this season,” Marina Krickler, concert series coordinator, said. “I was looking for music that represents the wonderful diversity we have here in Ashland. Sawaari brings together an exciting blend of cultures, and will introduce audience members to new instruments and sounds.”
Krickler is cofounder of the Andromeda Quintet, which launched the library’s Sunday music series in October.
The next concert in the series is Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, and will feature a Brazilian ensemble, led by violinist Julia Bomfim, who hails from Rio de Janeiro.
