The Garden Club of Norfolk was recently visited by award winning botanical art designer and show winner, Sarah Boynton. Sarah shared her “Techniques and Secrets of Botanical Arts Entries” at the Garden Club of Norfolk’s October meeting, a public program held at the Freeman-Kennedy School in Norfolk.
The major requirement of botanical art is that each design must be constructed entirely of plant material. Sarah shared her techniques, secrets, and planning ideas that helped to create her award-winning entries for flower shows. She explained how she collects and treats plant materials to make her entries, showing slides of her designs in progress as she explained the process and materials she uses to create each one.
Many of her original designs were displayed and those who attended had an opportunity to closely examine each and ask the designer questions about their design and the research that led to each interpretation of the class requirements that each show lists in their entry application.
Sarah has earned sixteen First Place awards in Boston, Newport and Philadelphia along with numerous top Artisan Awards and Best of Show awards, including First Place and Best Craft Exhibit at the 2014 WAFA World Flower Show in Dublin, Ireland, and Third Place at the 2017 WAFA World Flower Show in Barbados.
