The 3rd annual Bubba Strong Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, August 18 at the New England Country Club in Bellingham. The tournament will help raise funds for the Bubba Strong Charitable Foundation (BSCF), which supports families impacted by life-threatening diseases.
Greg “Bubba” Jacobson was a senior at KP High School in 2015 when he was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer, Rhabdomyosarcoma. Friends and community members helped organize a golf tournament to help defray some of the family’s expenses during treatment. The event was so successful that the Jacobson family decided to “pay it forward,” and the Bubba Strong Charitable Fund was born.
In addition to supporting families undergoing treatment, the 501©3 organization raises money for the pediatric cancer unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, where Greg was treated, as well as for two $1,000 scholarships for graduating KPHS seniors affected by serious illness.
According to Diane McLoughlin, BSCF President, last year the foundation supported two Wrentham families with children undergoing treatment for cancer with a $5,000 grant each. In addition, BSCF adopted a family with a sick child living in a shelter, ensuring the family had gifts for Christmas. The foundation also supplied gifts cards totaling $1,000 for MGH to distribute to pediatric patients during the holidays.
Diane McLoughlin and her husband George, friends of the Jacobson family, were instrumental in establishing the charitable foundation, which has raised $20,000 thus far.
In addition to the golf tournament, the Bubba Strong Charitable Fund also holds a bowling tournament during the winter to raise money for the foundation.
In the midst of planning this year’s tournament, the Jacobson family has had to face yet another challenge. In May, the family learned that Greg’s cancer had returned. He underwent successful surgery and is currently in the middle of more radiation treatments.
“The community’s prayers and generosity continue to keep us moving forward,” said Sue Jacobson, Greg’s mother. “Bubba continues to astound us with his smile and amazing attitude. He is the strength behind this fight.”
The golf tournament will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start and a scramble format. A putting competition will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. The $125 per golfer entry fee covers 18 holes of golf and dinner following the tournament, a raffle and auction, and a DJ. A dinner-only option is also available for $50.

“We hope it’s a tremendous success and we’re able to do all we did last year,” said Jacobson. “Raise some more money to help families going through this, that’s our goal.”
