The School of Continuing Studies at Dean College welcomed 25 high school teachers from Wuhan, China to campus June 25 for a week-long educational and cultural exchange. The visit was made possible by the college’s relationship with Cogdel Education Group, a company at the forefront of international education in China.
“We were extremely proud to be chosen to host the 25 high school teachers from Wuhan No. 6 High School in Wuhan Province, China,” said Paul Resten, Dean of Continuing Studies at Dean College. This visit was a culmination of a 6-month planning and review process and is the first in a series of sessions planned for 2017 and beyond.
The week-long visit included a variety of educational sessions both on and off campus. The group toured Franklin High School to participate in a roundtable discussion with the school’s administrators and teachers regarding current educational topics concerning the American public high school system. While on the Dean College campus, the group attended sessions facilitated by the college’s faculty and administrators, ranging from classroom management techniques to effective teaching methods and the use of technology in the classroom.
“The exchange of ideas was educational for both parties,” said Resten. “The group sessions allowed us to learn more about their systems and practices.”
The program concluded with a keynote presentation from Christopher Vasta Sr., Assistant Principal for Student Life and Academics at Xaverian Brothers High School, who provided an interactive session on leadership in the classroom.
After touring both Boston and New York City, the group returned to China.
“It was amazing to see how, despite the geographic and cultural disparities, there is so much in common in our approaches and challenges,” said Resten.
