Each year the Jack Grinold / Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation selects high school football players who have not only excelled on the football field but in the classroom as well. This year 33 local athletes were chosen to receive the award, which took place at the regional chapter’s 42nd annual banquet at the Boston / Newton Marriot on May 21. Grinold, a legend in the Bay State area, passed away in April.
Of the 33 high school football seniors to comprise the 2017 athletic class in Eastern Massachusetts, Wrentham’s King Philip found itself represented by not one but two football scholars. Representing the Warriors at the May banquet were John DeLuca and Brett Mazur, both graduating this month with a GPA above 4.0. Come next fall, DeLuca will be headed to Tufts University in Medford to continue his education on the next level, while Mazur will be attending the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.
The Jack Grinold /Eastern Massachusetts Chapter’s mission is to promote and develop the power of amateur football in developing the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, competitive zeal and the drive for academic excellence in America’s young people. They look to fulfill this mission in the following ways:
*By inspiring young people to excellence: holding up the greatest players and coaches in the history of the game as role models and enshrining them and their achievements in the College Football Hall of Fame.
*By exciting young people, and those who influence them, about the game: in particular, managing the College Football Hall of Fame in such a way as to dramatize the history, exhilaration and value of the game to an ever broadening audience of fans and potential fans.
*By developing, managing and promoting model football programs, which further strengthen the educational and character building qualities of the game.
*By honoring, publicizing and providing financial support to high school and college football players who represent our ideal of the scholar-athlete.
*By continuing a grassroots movement, through local chapters, while involving football fans, coaches, educators, the media and former players in the implementation of the programs, which will fulfill our mission for America.
“Having two students chosen is an honor, especially since they are not just scholars and athletes, but amazing young men,” King Philip Principal Dr. Lisa Mobley said. “The program here gives them the opportunity to rise to the top, but they did all the work and deserve the credit. They’ve gone beyond anything I’ve ever experienced here during my five years.”
