Morrill Memorial Library
The Morrill Memorial Library is launching a special three-part Disastour series with an illustrated lecture on “Chernobyl: Then and Now.” Disastour is defined as a trip with visits to various places of destruction, natural disaster, or catastrophe for pleasure or instruction. In this inaugural program in Technical Services Librarian Lydia Sampson’s Disastour series, author, historian, and Harvard Professor of Ukrainian History Serhii Plokhy will recount the history and aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl explosion. With insights from his new book, “Chernobyl: The History of a Nuclear Catastrophe,” as well as extensive expertise in Ukraine and Cold War studies, he will discuss the causes and implications of the worst nuclear disaster in history. Plokhy and Sampson, both having traveled recently to Chernobyl as researcher and tourist respectively, will describe the state of the region today. To sign up for this or future scheduled of these events, call 781-769-0200, x110, email [email protected], or stop by the library reference or information desk.
