“So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.”
The Fifth Annual Franklin Elks “Elks Care- Elks Share” 5K Road Race and Walk, coming up at 9:30 a.m. on September 30th (register now!) will follow that motto and benefit The Fisher House Boston and the Franklin Elks “Oil for Vets” program.
You can register as a walker or runner, or you could also sponsor the event. Find out more at www.franklinelks.org/elks5k. If you would like to just make a donation for this event, visit http://racewire.com/fundraiser.php?id=370744&npoid=683.
“The main beneficiary of our race is the Fisher House of Boston Foundation. They recognize not only the special sacrifices made by our men and women who serve in uniform, but also their loved ones,” writes Katie Morvan, of Lodge 2136. “The Fisher House Boston is a home away from home where our military families can stay while a loved one is receiving in-house treatment at one of our medical centers. Any veteran or military personnel, wartime or peacetime, is eligible to have a family member stay at a Fisher House. These homes are built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. A portion will also go to our Oil for Vets Fund which provides heat at no cost to local military families.”
The Franklin Elks Lodge #2136 is just one of the 2,400 Lodges in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, a 149-year-old Fraternal order with over 1 million Members. Work for veterans is foremost, with Franklin Elks helping In VA clinics, veterans’ homes, and more. The Elks Care – Elks Share 5K was created to bring the community together by working hand in hand in helping veterans. It comes just a few months after a Bike Run also intended to benefit Oil for Vets.
The Elks Care. Elks Share 5K will begin and end at the Franklin Elks Lodge, 1077 Pond Street, Franklin, MA 02038, on a mainly flat route. Same day registration will begin at 8 a.m., or participants can register in advance ($25 per individual, with team registration available) at www.franklinelks5k.com. The first 150 who register will receive a free t-shirt and goodies. Walkers and runners will be professionally timed by Racewire, with results posted online or available to be sent to smartphones. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will be given awards.
