KP Golf Looking to Improve

Last fall the King Philip golf team finished in the middle of the Hergett Division of the Hockomock League and was able to send four athletes to the Regionals. This year the Warriors will be looking to better themselves under a first year head coach, Myles McHugh.
“As a first year varsity head coach I definitely have some nerves coming in, but I want to do right by the kids,” he said. “As a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves, a lot of things that I encounter there translate to what you want to teach the kids.”
The new KP coach is looking to teach the Warrior golfers the mechanics of the sport along with the etiquette of the game. Although KP is typically not one of the premier golf teams in the Hockomock League, the team should be competitive. Senior captain Tyler DiFiore believes that the new coach should have no trouble adjusting.
“Coach McHugh was an assistant last year so I really don’t anticipate much of a change in regard to the way that we go about doing things,” he said. “We have a really strong junior class so I’m looking for this team to be over .500 this year. We may struggle against Oliver Ames, which always has an excellent team. We’ll be competitive with everyone else.”
One of McHugh’s main goals is that his players improve their game by the end of the season.
“This team has a lot of talent in the returning golfers and their mental make-up should allow us to go deep into the post-season,” McHugh said. “I’m interested in them getting better throughout the year, but I am also looking to send at least four golfers to the States, where they’ll do well.”
The Warrior team will be anchored by returning senior captain Tyler DiFiore, along with seniors Paul Williamson and Ian Nally. The warrior captain is a true golfer in the sense that he is calm, cool, and collected, said the coach. He’s the glue that holds the team together.
Williamson is a team player that puts together a solid game and gives KP some depth to its lineup. Nally is probably the best overall golfer on the squad and should definitely be in the top scores each and every match.
In addition to his captains providing the spark on the links, McHugh is also expecting some strong performances this campaign from juniors Nate Ihley and Jack Hastry. Both athletes should find themselves in the top four on a regular basis.
Two other juniors who will be teeing up for the Warriors will be Ray Mullin and Kayla Schuberth. Mullin is laser focused when it comes to golf and Schuberth has a very good golf game and should find herself as one of the team’s better golfers.
“I’m expecting the world from these two. Both have been working exceptionally hard this off-season and will bring some outstanding skills to the golf course,” the coach said. “They both have the ability to be phenomenal when they’re on their game. The have the potential to make a huge impact for the team this year.”
As the season gets ready to tee off, McHugh likes his team’s depth despite not having a true stud in the lineup.
“This team is going to have pretty good team depth that will allow us to be consistent,” McHugh said. “We may not have that one standout golfer like we had last year in all-star Danny McLaughlin, but we will have four top golfers, who will all have respectably low scores.”
The coach is looking for improvement and success on the greens this fall and his captain echoes that sentiment.
“As a captain this year I’m looking to have a good overall environment throughout the season with team focus,” DiFiore said. “I’m ready to work for our success and a lot of kids on the team share in my thoughts. We should get a good quality of play out there from everyone.”
King Philip will play their home games at Wentworth Hills Country Club in Plainville as they look forward to a successful season from all of the golfers.
