KPHS Senior to Receive Frank Kelley Adversity Award

King Philip Regional High School senior Matt Andrews will be awarded the prestigious Frank Kelley Adversity Award at the annual Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association’s (MSTCA) awards banquet this summer, announced KP Superintendent Paul Zinni.
Andrews was nominated for the award by coach Chris Elgar, and will be recognized at the MSTCA awards banquet on June 9. The Frank Kelley Adversity Award recognizes a student track athlete that overcomes a hardship, physical or mental disabilities, or adversity.
During this year’s fall cross country and indoor track seasons, Andrews had a medical condition concerning his lungs that disallowed him from competing in three competitions and from weeks of training with his teammates. While this hardship was challenging, Andrews continued to attend practices, meets, and cheerfully supported his teammates. He ultimately needed surgery during the cross country season this fall, and his team competed in his honor while he recovered.
“It’s not that he endured it, it is how he endured it,” Elgar said. “His attitude and support for the team was so powerful. He took it all in stride, and came to every practice to support his teammates to do their best. For a senior student who loves running and dreams of competing at a high level, it’s remarkable how he handled it so professionally and maturely.”
Andrews, a three team captain this year for the school’s boys cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams, will have the opportunity to continue competing this spring during the outdoor track season. He predominantly competes in the mile and two-mile events.
“This award reflects the positivity and maturity of a truly remarkable student,” Superintendent Zinni said. “Matt has acted gracefully and has been an exemplary captain in supporting his team. He’s proven to be a great leader, in addition to a talented, hardworking athlete.”
