Boston – State Senator Richard Ross is pleased to announce that the grant funds for the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) and Senior SAFE programs have been awarded for FY 2017. Ten of the senator’s twelve municipalities received one or both grants. The Franklin Fire Department received a S.A.F.E. Grant of $5,641 and a Senior SAFE Grant of $2,996.
“The municipalities that applied for the S.A.F.E. and Senior SAFE Grants have done a great service to the children and seniors in their communities,” said Senator Ross. “Fire safety is important for everyone, but even more crucial to our most vulnerable citizens.”
Since the S.A.F.E. Program was created twenty-two years ago, the average annual child fire deaths have been reduced by 70%. The Senior SAFE program later followed in the FY 14 budget in support of senior fire prevention training. Seniors are the most vulnerable of populations at risk of fire related deaths. This relatively new initiative is aimed at educating seniors on fire prevention, general home safety and how to be better prepared in the event of a fire.
