The Norfolk Historical Commission has announced that the Highland Lake crossing sign has been restored. Drivers coming down Seekonk Street towards Main Street can see the new sign if they slow down and look to the right before crossing the railroad tracks.
According to Barb Bartholomew of the Norfolk Historical Commission, the original sign was maintained by the late Arthur Keenan, Lieutenant on the Norfolk Fire Department as well as an EMT. After he passed away in 2002, the sign became a victim of neglect.
Keenan’s son, Patrick, attempted to restore the sign with supplies furnished by the Norfolk Historical Commission. However, restoration proved to be impossible because years of neglect had destroyed the board.
Through the combined efforts of the Norfolk Historical Commission, the Norfolk D.P.W., and the younger Keenan, the sign once again stands proudly at the Highland Lake crossing.
