Ross Co-Sponsors Bill Relative to Aaron Hernandez Conviction

Issue Date:

Article Body:

State Senator Richard Ross (R-Wrentham) is co-sponsoring legislation filed by Representative Evandro Carvalho (D-Dorchester), that would bring justice to victims such as Odin Lloyd should a criminal conviction be overturned due to a defendant’s untimely suicide.
An Act Relative to Odin Lloyd addresses current law known as “Abatement AB Initio”, meaning that upon a person’s death, if they have not exhausted their legal appeals, the case will revert to its original status as if the case had not been tried. If passed, this legislation would nullify the right of Abatement AB Initio only for those who have died by suicide.
“Though tragedy struck both families involved in the events of Hernandez’s suicide and conviction, the lack of justice served to Odin Lloyd and his family can never be reversed,” said Senator Ross. “This legislation will protect families in similar circumstances so that justice is maintained regardless of the defendant’s appeal status at the time of his/her suicide.”
