The Friends of the Millis Public Library recently presented their annual scholarship at the Millis High School graduation exercises on June 1. The scholarship is awarded to a deserving high school senior who plans to further his or her education and who has shown a commitment to community service, especially related to libraries and/or literacy and reading.
This year’s recipient, chosen by the Scholarship Committee, is Stephanie O’Reilly, who will be attending Sacred Heart University in the fall. This award was presented by Bob Whitman, a member of the Friends Scholarship Committee.
Stephanie was a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Council and has volunteered many hours to her church and community including participating in the Summer Reading Kick-off and Fun Fair event at the Millis Public Library. Very impressive were her volunteer efforts on behalf of the non-profit, More Than Words, a social enterprise that empowers at-risk youth to take charge of their lives by taking charge of and running a real business, an online and retail bookstore - a very unique and successful program. As Bob said in his presentation speech, “We applaud and are very excited to honor our recipient’s efforts on behalf of More Than Words to include a Book Drive organized and run right here in Millis High School and for her work on site.”
The Friends of the Millis Public Library, founded in 1983, is a volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to the support and enhancement of library services. For more information about the Friends, visit the group’s page at www. millislibrary.org.
